Maintaining the Momentum: Highlights From the Uganda International

Our History

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) was founded in 1952 at the Third International Conference on Planned Parenthood in Bombay, India. It was the result of the campaign of a handful of courageous and committed women, including Margaret Sanger in the United States, Elise Ottesen-Jensen of Sweden and Dhanvanthi Rama Rau of India, who were jailed for claiming that women had the right to control their own fertility. They were determined to work with different cultures, traditions, laws and religious attitudes to improve the lives of women worldwide. From this bold vision, IPPF born.

Today, the IPPF is one of the largest organizations of sexual and reproductive health in the world, recognized both as a pioneer in the provision of services and in the development of international public policy. Headquartered in London, the Federation consists of six regional offices that provide technical assistance, funding and coordination between local members.

IPPF / Western Hemisphere Region was founded in 1954. It is composed of 40 organizations of sexual and reproductive health in Latin America and the Caribbean, and our Regional Office is based in New York.
